RE: Anyone know of Walmart in Southern Maine that allows RVs

Maine Turnpike Mile 32 Biddeford exit. The Walmart is just off to your right. As you pull in the quietest spots are over on the far left as you face the Walmart building. Very quiet neighborhood.
Maine Turnpike Mile 40 Scarboro exit. The new Cabella's is off to the right. RV entrace is the 2nd road on the right. I believe they allow overnight parking but you may want to confirm that. A quiet neighborhood but for my 2 cents it's closer to the turnpike (I-95) and I'd prefer Biddeford.
Have a great Maine day.

Nova Scotia - how many base camps?

Nest month we'll be heading to NS for 2 or 3 weeks. Been looking through the superb tourist guide they publish and I left wondering how many base camps we should plan on. We tow a 30 foot fifth wheel and plan on setting up camp and then using the truck to explore. The more I study the map, the more it becomes apparent that we should plan on at least 2 different locations to cut down on day trip mileage.
For those of you that have been there or live there, what would your recommendation be for a couple or three locations to use as base camps?
Thanks!

CG near West Point, NY and I-84

Early next week we will be passing through this area and if I can find a decent CG near I-84, we might stay a day or two and visit the West Point Military Academy. A quick search didn't provide too many leads.
Any suggestions for a night or two?

RE: Norcold strike plate molded backwards !!

Well Doug, I checked the owners manual and thought I would prove you wrong. To my surprise, you are quite correct. There are in fact no locks of any type. The alignment seems to be spot on, so I'll just invest in more bungee cords.
Thanks for the tip.

Norcold strike plate molded backwards !!

We've had this 5er for a year or so now and have had a problem with the door coming open while traveling. I've blamed SWMBO and she's blamed me for not sliding the door lock into place. This time I took a closer look and found that the plastic locking pins from the two doors never engage the strike plate. The holes in the strike plate are in the wrong place!
The two holes for the mormal door latch line up correctly. The two for the locks should be inwards of those about 1/4 inch. Instead the strike plate has the holes 1/4 inch outward. Because the plate has a flange for the screws it can't just be reversed.
I'm going to try and drill holes in the plastic strike plate when we get home from this trip but I wonder if this is a common problem. Can't believe they made only one mirror image strike plate.

RE: What causes the black cloud of death? UPDATE 6/29

Well, we had the dealer take a look at it. No messages or codes were found. They reflashed the computer with the latest and greatest version.
Drove about 600 miles on this trip and had one stumble. Again, it was immediately after fueling. I'm making a WAG that it is somehow tied into the foaming action that diesel pumps cause.
Anyone else ever see anything similar?

RE: GPS - POI question

Thanks for the info. Went to POI Factory and downloaded the entire file for Dunkin Donuts, Cracker Barrel and WalMart. Now if the UPS truck would just pull into the driveway.............

GPS - POI question

My wife just ordered me a Garmin 350 for Fathers Day. Yea, ME!!
I'm reading the user manual online and I'm a little confused about POI's. We have used the book, The Next Exit, for several years so we know where the next Wendy's, or Dunkin Donuts or Cracker Barrel is located and plan our stops accordingly. One section of the user manual seems to say these POI's are preloaded. Another section seems to say that each user can download their own POI files based on their own needs.
Which is it?

RE: Bed clearance vs. dead level 5er?

Ford and Dodge 4X4 trucks sits higher so it makes the tasks a bit harder to have the 5er dead level.
Yup, we went to an F-350 in February and now that the season has begun, I've noticed we're slightly off. Going to take a tape measure to it this weekend in a flat parking lot to get the exact measurement. Good time to check and see if there's any adjustment room on the axles.
Thanks for your thoughts. I really didn't want to reduce the gap any and it sounds like most of you agree.
Happy traveling.

Bed clearance vs. dead level 5er?

What is your average clearance between the top of your PU truck sidewall and the bottom of your 5er?
I've got about 6 inches ;), like it that way, but my 5er is slightly out of level. To make it level I'd guess I would need to drop the 5er front about 2 inches.
What's your experience? Is that enough clearance?

RE: Baxter State Park - Maine

You might compare it to Katahdin Shadows
I've stayed at this one and it was OK. Lots of kids but clean and well kept.
The advantage to the one you posted is that it's 24 miles closer to the park.

RE: What causes the black cloud of death? UPDATE 6/29

Haven't had a chance to get to the dealer yet. The few times I've driven it since the trip, it's acted fine. I will update the thread once the dealer has had a chance to look at it.

RE: 6.0 PSD Owners only please

2004 F-350 SRW Crew Cab 8' box w/4.10 gears:
daily driving - 15 mpg
towing 11,000 fifth wheel - between 10 and 11.
With only 43,000 miles on the truck I'm waiting for the break in period to finish before making any extravagant claims!

RE: What causes the black cloud of death? UPDATE 6/29

The diesel fuel was from a high volume truck stop, so I'm reasonably confident it's not bad fuel. (And no, it was not gasoline, but I do understand that it happens from time to time!)
I will change the 2 fuel filters as suggested.
I will read the threads on sticking EGR valves. Is the EGR valve a user replacement item?

RE: Toyota Matrix

2003 Matrix owner here. I'm up to 117K miles with absolutely no complaints. I'm 6'4 and 300 pounds and very comfortable driving. It's the first car I ever owned where I can wear a hat while driving.
I have the AWD version and just love it. Perfect for Maine weather. Runs about 30-31 MPG.

What causes the black cloud of death? UPDATE 6/29

I'm a complete novice in the diesel world. Bought our 04 this winter and just made the first long trip towing our 5th wheel. No problems encountered until about 5 miles from home. Got off the Interstate, fueled up and ran into Wally world for a few supplies. On leaving there was a slight uphill grade.
The truck had no power to speak of, stumbled a little (if it was a gasser I would say it was flooded) and was belching the most enormous black cloud of death you can imagine. I've seen freight trains run by with less smoke. After a half mile or so, everything was back to normal both uphill and down. Nothing lit up on the dash. I'm going to the dealer to have error codes checked but wonder if anyone has thoughts on what could have happened?

RE: Inverter question - some general rambling

Here's a link to what should be the manual for that inverter/charger Trace Legend Note well the instructions on Page 16 for how to turn the inverter on, and note that it will automatically go to charge mode when power is applied, whether you turn it on or not.
Well, that's almost the right model. It seems to be the next one down in scale. I'll poke around that website to see if I can find the correct one. The on/off switch doesn't seem to function the same in my model as the one illustrated.
Thanks for the lead.

Fuses? Didn't see any fuse holders but they may be hidden on the backside, guess that's my next step.
Thanks for the input.
